Holiday Eating

Did you know that the average American gains 1-3 pounds in the month of December…and the weight typically stays!

There can be extra pounds that like to creep up during this holiday time of year. We see homemade cookies, hot chocolate, cheesecake, homemade toffee, caramel, fudge, eggnog, and all sorts of snacks galore.

Some people might say, don’t eat it, limit yourself, or have self-control. But you know what we say? Enjoy this holiday. Eat what you want to eat while still staying health-focused. Go to those Christmas parties every weekend and have a good time with family and friends. That’s what this time of year is about.

That is not to say that you should just open your mouth like a garbage truck and dump it all down. The key: ENJOY it.

While enjoying your food, here’s what you can do to stay health-focused. We challenge you to COMMIT to doing these things, to keep a healthy relationship with all the food during this holiday:

  • Get at least 30 minutes of activity per day. Exercise with family! Go for a hike, a bike ride, a jog, a ski trip, a walk, a family 5K. There are endless possibilities.

  • Prep the meals with family or friends. Makes the process more enjoyable and might keep you from “tasting” too much!

  • When surrounded by goodies, involve your fruits and veggies. Make half of what you eat colorful fruits and veggies. Use half veggies instead of chips in dips.

  • Chew slowly! Try to really taste and savor every single bite.

  • Remember that these foods might be around for a while. Don’t eat like it’s your last day of life!

  • Drink more water before a meal, during a meal, after a meal, between meals.

  • Don’t skip meals to leave “more room” for other meals. This can lead to overeating because you let yourself get too hungry. 

  • Don’t worry about your weight. Enjoy the holiday and focus on time with those people you love. It only comes once a year! Don’t waste it focusing on numbers.

Just remember this one thing during your holidays: Enjoy it. You don’t have to turn down your favorite sweets. Stay in-tune and listen to your body. If you feel like you need to get some movement, go take a walk! If you want that treat, slow down and enjoy it. Enjoying it will prevent any later food guilt or shame. Remember that food isn’t just fuel, it’s fun! Eat what you love…and love yourself for eating it.
