Healthy Gas Station Snacks for The Road

Whether it’s powering through a daily commute, shuttling the kids to activities, or heading out on an epic road trip, hunger sometimes strikes when we are in the car. Meanwhile with chains like Wawa in our backyard, it’s tempting to take a detour inside after filling up at the pump. For that reason, we ask this question: What are some cheap gas station snacks that are healthy?

We took a field trip to our local station and found so many snacks to recommend. However, we only included items that come in single-serve packages that are perfect to grab and go. If you’ve found yourself asking, “How can I eat healthy at a gas station?”, then we have the answers.

Here is our list of suggested gas station snacks:

Fresh cut fruit:

First, fruit is always a good option. We found mango, pineapple and watermelon chunks, grapes and fruit salad at Wawa, all in individual-sized to go containers.

Hard-boiled eggs:

Next we noticed that Wawa had pre-packaged “farm fresh” eggs that are peeled and ready to eat. Given that the package comes with two hard-boiled eggs, it offers 12 grams of protein.

Greek Yogurt cups:

There were lots of options but above all, we recommend Oikos Vanilla, with 15 grams of protein and only five grams of sugar. We likewise recommend Two Good Vanilla Yogurt with 12 grams of protein and only two grams of sugar. Both  contain no artificial sweeteners.

Yogurt drinks:

Meanwhile, if you want yogurt that is easier to have while driving, Chobani Greek Yogurt Drink is our go-to. While these are higher in sugar than we’d like, they do offer 10 grams of protein

Individual cheese snacks:
For example, Sargento string cheese has about 70 calories and 5 grams of protein and comes individually-wrapped. Choose mozzarella, cheddar, or Pepper Jack. Additionally, try Panino Hard Salami, which is mozzarella cheese wrapped in (you guessed it), salami. Each package comes with two pieces and offers 8.5 grams of protein and 150 calories.

Oh Snap Dilly Bites:

If you love pickles, then these dill pickle bites will be right up your alley. They are great for on-the-go snacking. There’s also no brine added, so no mess. In addition there are just 15 calories per package.

Sprouted Organic Snacking Seeds.

We found them in Spicy Fiesta flavor. These come in a one ounce bag with 180 calories and 6 grams of protein.

Nuts, nut and more nuts:

For example, Blue Diamond Almonds come in snackable 1.5 ounce pouches with fun flavors like Smokehouse and Bold Siracha. Similarly, Nut Harvest’s in-shell pistachios come in convenient 1.75 ounce packs.

Skinny Pop Popcorn:

The single-serving bags are great for a salty snack, with 80 calories and 2 grams of fiber.

Pirate’s Booty:
This fan favorite likewise comes in a single-serving size that’s great for the car, with just 70 calories and no artificial colors or preservatives.

Kind Nut Bars:
These are our go-to for a tasty treat without all the chemicals, artificial flavors and added sugar to be found in many protein bars. Meanwhile they have between 4 and 7 grams of protein and come in flavors like Caramel Almond, Cranberry Almond, Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt, and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Quest Protein Cookie: These provide 15 grams of protein, less than 1 gram of sugar, and 9 grams of fiber. Rather than your favorite cookie pack, reach for these instead.

Stryve Beef Biltong: These 2.25 ounce packages contain only air-dried beef slices, vinegar and spices. Meanwhile there’s no nitrates or preservatives, and 0 sugar. Every bag has about 200 calories and 36 grams of protein.

Those who are on a higher-calorie diet can consider these two favorites as well:

Wawa brand Grapes and Cheese with Crackers:
Find this in Wawa’s “Express Snacks” refrigerated section. This tasty pack has 370 calories and 14 grams of protein.

Sabra Snackers Classic Hummus and Pretzels:
These are delicious and convenient, but they do have 370 calories. Simply add an apple however, and make it a meal.

If none of these options make your mouth water, that’s ok too since less healthy alternatives abound. Just buy the small bag so you don’t mindlessly consume an entire family-sized bag of chips as you drive. Meanwhile, be aware of the calories you are eating. After all, even a small bag of popular snacks or one candy bar may contain multiple servings.
