Did you know?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other bowel-related issues can play a HUGE role in the quality of life, social outings, and even work productivity. Individuals with IBS restrict their normal activities at an average of 20% of the days out of the year! If you have been diagnosed with IBS, you may experience agonizing stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, cramping, and/or gas. If any of these symptoms brought back painful memories that you wish to forget, you aren’t alone. This syndrome affects 10-15% of the population. IBS is not a disease, rather a variety of bothersome symptoms.
It can be difficult and frustrating to manage IBS, IBD, Crohn’s, gastroparesis, and other GI-related issues.
The best way to treat and prevent the triggering of symptoms is to live a healthy lifestyle. This can include managing stress, eating a healthy diet and exercising. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics explains more the causes and triggers here.
Evidence shows that a low-FODMAP diet can be extremely beneficial and significantly improve symptoms. This elimination diet is not permanent. It is meant to find IBS triggers to further reduce symptoms.
As you may know, there may be certain foods that cause gas, diarrhea, and/or bouts of constipation. Getting started on an elimination diet or low-FODMAP diet can be extremely restrictive at first. It may be new territory for you. These diets are always individualized, which is why it is crucial to work with a registered dietitian for your meal planning, food choices, and grocery shopping.
